Double Page spread (DPS)

Double Page Spread (DPS) Analysis

Displaying IMG_1699.JPG

Like the contents page, the colour scheme continues with the abstract pink and green. The layout of this DPS is very structured as it only has an introduction and two columns. The text is a normal and sophisticated and says a lot about the company and the artist. This is slightly unconventional for this genre of magazine, as it is not normally this formal. The picture of the artist is very much the same as the others; it is a very straight forward wide shot with his face being very serious with a lot of emotion in his eyes.

CONTENTS PAGE ANALYSIS

Displaying IMG_1697.JPG
This magazine only has one content; on this contents the page the number of pages in the magazine do not go up in chronological order, this is due to the amount of adverts that is in between each article.
The pink and green abstract colour scheme is continued on to the contents and a wide shot of the same artist is also on the contents page.

Under each page number there is a small description about what each page will be about, allowing the reader to be prepared for what they are about to read. This contents page is very simple and not overcrowding with information. There is only one column making it easy for the reader to find information furthermore the page looks very organised.

FRONT COVER ANALYSIS

XXL is an American which covers the urban lifestyle of celebrities, this magazine covers all aspects of hip-hop culture. XXL focuses on music, style, sports, and politics with intelligence, sophistication, integrity. XXL was found in 1997. XXL can be found online and can be brought in store, when you subscribe on-line fans can be available to many updates from concert to updates on celebrities’ lives. The general target audience for XXL magazine is 78% male readers, with the median age of 27, and 44.7% college buyers, and 67% African Americans Priced at £3.95 XXL is the number 1 selling magazine on the news-stand which outsells magazines like Rolling Stone, Vibe, and spin.

The MastHead (XXL) is in the top left hand corner, behind the artist's head. Using this strategy implies that the company is confident that wherever the product is, it conveys the belief  they have that this product will be recognise any where its seen. The font of the masthead is in white block capital letter
Is a good strategic advertisement skill.

The main cover image is a close up of the artist (Kendrick Lamar), this close up of the artist face shows a lot of emotions which corresponds with the sub-title "In My Own Words". The editors used capital letters for each word to emphasise that the inside story from the artist and it’s very personal they also correspond with the main cover image. The fact that there is a blow up of a close up of the artist also implies know that the magazine company knows how to draw their target demographics’ attention.

The main cover line of the magazine is the artist's name and "In My Own Story "; these words are in big block bold writing the editor may have done this because they know it will draw the audience to know about this very interesting cover story as it is very exclusive and personal. Also the font could correspond with emotions of the artists face as his face is very straight no smiles and very serious.

The editor deliberately places the barcode and price in the corner of the magazine to distract the audience from the price.

In this magazine front cover the three colour schemes is slightly misused; as they are 4 colours used. The first colour is the red in the masthead (name of magazine), the second colour is an abstract pink and green, the third colour is the very faint yellow on the side. First of all he abstract colour (pink and green) are warm/cool colours and it could correspond with the main cover story being personal but also with the artist being someone very cool.

This front cover is very simple, it’s not cover crowed and the colours complement each other well, this reflects in the company and how well structured and organised they are.

Comparing College magazines

College magazine

I have two college magazine covers that I am going to be comparing. One of which is really good college magazine and the other is not so good due its bad editing and positioning.
Magazine 01 presents a student as the model and the picture of the student is very appropriate for the genre of the magazine. The maste Head is extremely bold and bright which connotes that being in college can give you a bright future, in addition it makes the magazine visible from a distance. The different information on the magazine is also appropriate for the magazine. The magazine is very structured and organizes. The lighting of the image is very is well placed as it allows the viewers eyes to directed to her. The colour scheme of the magazine fits the traditional 3 three colour scheme rule know this because her binder is pink light blue and white and the maste head is light blue.
The difference between magazine 01 and magazine 02 is that the quality of magazine02 is not as effective and doesn’t t look very professional like magazine 01. Magazine 02 doesn’t look very professional, it is badly Photoshop and over all looks it was rushed. The information is very relevant however they are badly placed.  Both magazine have the same aim however magazine 01 is more appealing as it looks more professional, eye catching and attractive  to the target audience.

Contents page 'Top fo the pops' case study 2

 Background
The overall layout of the contents page is well structured in comparison to the front cover which was very busy. The front cover is place on the contents page with arrows pointing from numbers to its corresponding article. This is unique and very helpful, I really like that idea and so I’m going to implant it into my own product. There are to main images on the contents page; the front the cover and an image of a famous boy band (one direction).
Colours
The colours have been very consistent which makes the magazine stand out. The slight yellow highlight is effective in attracting the audience, its an energetic colour which is what the magazine is trying to portray; a upbeat and up lifting vibe. The pink denotes the feeling of being bold and it emphasise the feminine vibe. By using these bright and warming colours shows the active nature of magazine and pop music in general. The white connotes a new beginning and creation of music. Even though when my target demographic looks at a magazine they will not think as deep all this will get their attention and the will be thinking about it in the unconsciously
Subscription box
There is no subscription box because of the younger demographic.

Subheading
Using the sub heading in each column and a title on top gives the magazine a very structured and organize layout as its allowed different section for different features which is then grouped together with there individual page.
Page numbers
The page numbers helps to navigates the reader throughout the magazine, this is very effective as the reader can choose what they feel like reading and they can skip out what they don’t like. The yellow highlighted page number and summary on the chosen page number shows the important gossip.
Editors note
There is no editorial not showing that the magazine’s purpose is  to inform young teenage girls.

Case Study 2 Top of the pops

Introduction
This case study will be on the magazine “top of the pop”, unfortunately due to lack of pop magazine in stores, I was forced to use one of line. In this case study I will be analysing the front cover, contents page and a DPS. This is going to benefit me because it will help me in the making of my own magazine. Top of the pop is a monthly publication which is publish by BBC Magazine. It features fashion and beauty tips, celeb gossip, quiz ,posters etc

Front Cover
This front cover is very text dominated and it’s very busy suggesting that the magazine has a lot going on in the pop industry. The main photo is a mid shot of the model (artist-Cher Lloyd). The model is wearing a white and pink jumper to match the colour scheme which illustrates a very girly innocent theme. However the Models tattoo on her arm gives the impression that she isn’t so innocent and portrays the rebellious side to her. The fact that the mode is directly looking into the camera shows off her confidence. The background and the overall layout is very cluttered, there is a white backdrop which helps to enhance the model’s features as well as showing up the images and the puff on the magazine, this is very eye catching to the targeted audience. The rule of thirds was taken into account when making this magazine, the rule of three is a conventional layout for a magazine as it helps the publisher to accurately position the different elements for the magazine.  I really like the colour scheme as it’s very girly and appealing to girls of similar age of my demographic. Some of these will be reflected in my won magazine however I will change it to make it my own.
Sky-line, Footer and Masthead
“Top of the pops” is in pink bold capital letters at the top and centre of the magazine, this will catch the public’s eye as it big and quirky, and it will also make them eager to read what’s in the magazine. The font is very quirky but also simple which is very attractive, the dramatic font on the “S” conveys a very soft and feminine style. The use of the shape in the middle of “top” and “pop” is also very creative. The sky-line at the very top of the magazine is attractive the audience by using “quiz” which connotes the magazine has a lot of knowledge about kissing. This is appealing because is magazine is giving tips to the audience which will make them want to buy it even more. This is a very good advertising technique. The footer of this magazine is a strip of a purple banner, the footer as very simple role which is to talk about the extras “Plus”, this shows that the magazine has a lot more to read about inside.
     Colours
The two main colours are pink and purple which are the two stereotypical colours for girls. These colours are consistent throughout the whole magazine which shows are very structured magazine. Because the colours used in this magazine are warm colours I will take this in to consideration when making my own magazine.

Puff/Cover lines
By using puff the magazine gets a very uplifting feeling. The block capitals inside the puff “why I’ll never get used to fame!”  Is pull quote from the article interview with the artist (model ) this will immediately  grabs the audience attention as to why this artist saying this. They are quite a few cover lines on this magazine, this helps to draw the attention of the public so they can find out what’s inside the magazine. The main cover line “why I’ll never get used to fame” this is portraying that the artist doesn’t feel like she has reached her fame.
Barcode, Dates, Issue and pricing

The fact the barcode, date issue and pricing is relatively small it shows how irrelevant they are. This is also a good technique to make the audience to focus on the main contents of the magazine,

Comparing music and college magazines

As you can see there aren’t many differences between music and college magazine, Magazines front covers can have so many different layouts, both Music magazines follow the traditional layout as well as traditional 3 colour rule. Both magazines have a masthead which is covered by the model, and it looks very looks both magazines have cover lines to give the audience information of what they might see inside the magazine. Both magazines have a bar code; both can also have issue date and the price. Another thing that these magazine have in common is that the cover model on a college magazine would usually be smiling with their teeth.

During that lesson i learnt a few new key term such as: Maste Head(the name of the magazine), Bar-code,flash puff, skyline(txt above the maste head; across the magazine front cover) etc. found that lesson very constructive above you will see a picture of the magazine cover and some notes I took in the lesson.

Has digital technology killed Music Magazines?

In my opinion digital technology has killed music magazine, I believe this because facts has shown that print figures as decrease with the last year. The magazine company N.M.E(New Musical Express) is down to less than 15,000 copies sold a week with q magazines seeing a 21.8% year on year decline and now averages 46,096 copies per issue. This fact proves that paper magazines has significantly dropped since people are no longer buying them and people are using online magazines instead. Web 2.0 has made a big impact on the music magazine industry as it has allowed people to access information about artist rather than to wait on a magazine to come out.

Another reason with I agree the statement is because to make magazines a lot of trees are having to be cut down which is causing carbon dioxide which is release into the air. Whereas having a kindle or tablet or computer it’s easier because all you have to do is subscribe to get notice or just download and this will being  save trees and cheaper too.
There are many different types of music magazine, the main types of music magazine in the industry are; Indie music, KERRANG and Top of the Pops. All three magazines have an online website which offers interactive pop ups, actual videos of interviews etc., this is more appeals to people because it’s free and easy to access. It is also more up to date unlike a magazine which tries to cover all news for two season.

Normally people would wait for a magazine to come to read up on an artist life or for gossip, but now in the 21st century social media has taken up that role. Nowadays artist used twitter and Instagram to update their fans about the latest news in their life, fans would follow these to keep trendy and updated.

I in believe in the future the technology will be a big part in the music industry and paper back magazines will no longer be used, because technology will be taking over and people will be trying to find new ways to make life’s of subscriber and readers easier.

This is my induction work and this is basically explaining my views on how technology has advanced. It explains how technology has advanced so much  that we no longer paperback magazines.
